filtering and heating such a small tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
small air pump with airstone, little sponge. dont think you would need heating, just keep at room temperature.

A Large sump.. or maybe a fluval fx5... an airstone filter could work and you can get heaters that are like a pad that goes under the aquarium i think.. i have heard about them haven't actually seen them..

The idea behind this was to have a tank for my rosy barbs to spawn in peace. They were going at it like crazy in my 20 gal community but nothing would survive.

I found a really old undergravel filter that I had. The bottom part is about 7" round. Fit ok in the tank. So I used 3/4 tank water from my 20 gallon and rest i topped off with treated tap water. I used my led flashlight as a temporary light. =) The rosy barbs are going at it again after 10 minutes in the tank. They accepted food right away. I might take a trip to the lfs and see if they have a 10 gallon cheap with filter and hood.
The air pump I am using is a dual output but only one side pushes air. Took a bit of weight to keep the undergravel filter down. It was too much air lol.

Here are pics of the 3 gallon hex tank.

I don't think room temperature is okay for most fish, but I'm pretty sure Rosy barbs are more tolerant of lower temperatures.

However, a tank that small is going to have serious temperature fluctuations.

Rosy barbs are a cool water fish so you dont have to worry about heating. However, if you did want to heat a small tank, I suggest a reptile heat pad under the tank. If you have a several small tanks to heat then place them all within a larger tank with some water and heat the large tank.

I would recommend a floating acrylic yarn mop for spawning. They will prefer it and its easier to change out to harvest eggs (and sterilise).
