Third rock from the sun
I've been kicking around the idea of building an outdoor pond for my Florida gar.. the dims would be like 5'x5'x3' deep and I'm wondering what a good filter would be for a pond of this size and if somebody could point me towards a tutorial on how to set up a pond with a filter... thanks

EDIT: How deep would it have to be for it to not freeze in midwest US winters?

You could just do duckweed, bog, lilys, or other water plants to keep it clean with pumps for flow. Looks more natural imo.

I use intex pool pumps (1800gph) and for the water fall to oxyginize the water I use a intex sand filter.

For your pond I'd use 3 pumps. 2 for flow and 1 for a water fall. All 3 around 1800gph+ more the better. You can probably get maybe 2 more floridas in there. I remember when I had my 5 gars in there it was so cool seeing them hunt it's kindof like dolphins In a way.

Yeah for me to get this a lot would have to go right.. what other stock could potentially work in this pond with the Florida?

Probably going to have to heat it in your area. Too cold

I wouldn't start off with any expensive tank mates yet try some catfish and koi that can't fit in his mouth. How cold does Is get? I don't live where it freezes over so I never have to worry about that. But gar can live in pretty cold temps. Maybe you could do a green house if you have space around the pond.

Oh it gets into the negatives here usually not too cold but it would most likely freeze over as there is usually like 2 or more foot of ice on the lake here...
