Alright I have 2 tanks with aquatech 30-60 and both of them make stupid amounts of noise. I can't take it any more so I'm going to buy new filters. I already cut the filters short to he'll but it doesn't. I cleaned them put 3 times today and there still anoyying as hell. It may be that the filters in general suck. Anyway. What is everyone's opinions on this. I'd like a canister but I know how they work just not in the tank. And I don't know if its okay with sand.

Do you mean? do they work with a sand substrate?
Or do you mean ? do they work with sand inside?
if the first, you can have a sand substrate, but keep the intake far enough above the substrate that sand does not get sucked into the canister and ruin the impeller.
If the 2nd option, sand again would ruin the canister.

My tetra and other filter are silent till sand gets in then the most anoying cracking starts the moment it takes sand in

I don't think sand has anything to do with it. I think there just peices of **** there from Walmart. I got 2 405s for 30$

An Eheim classic should work well. They are SILENT and the bottom mounted intake and top mounted output pump makes them good with sand setups.

I have two different canisters on my 125. An FX5 and an Aquatop cf500uv. I notice just the tiniest amount of sand in them when I clean them. The type of sand matters though. I use pool filter sand from Home Depot and it's just about the perfect size to look good and not cloud. If you were to use playground or sand box sand from them, I've heard that it can cloud a lot ad get in to the filters easier.

See my thread for an idea of what the sand looks like:
