I have just read a post in another thread that refers to the fact that bio filtration is not nescessary, particulate filtration is enough......

Short of doing drastic daily water changes, how can this be ?

I would say it can be done, it would just be infinitely harder to maintain a healthy environment.
Three types of filtration: bio, mechanical and chemical. People usually use a combo of these, but I don't think there is any rule that says you HAVE to use any one in particular.

Because those tanks are very, VERY understock such the the nitrifying bacteria growing on the substrate, deco, tank walls is sufficient. Heavily planting of the tank also reduce the amount of nitrifying bacteria required.
Therefore only mechanical filtration is required

Not so fast, my friend.
My 55 is plum full of Mbuna and runs without a lick of bio specific media.
Sand, rocks, and glass is the home for my bacterial colonies.
Been that way for quite awhile.
No ammonia/nitrite, only the steady climb of nitrate untill a WC.
