filters and gravel vac help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
comon anybody? I know somebody on here has to have an answer...

I don't think I quit understand your question but ill give it ago. The link is for a canister filter it filters you tank. It like a hang on the back filter but it doesn't go in you tank it sits beside or under it were ever you want to put it. It has a intake and outake hose and those go in the tank. Canister filters tend to be more quit then HOB filters and usually can hold more media.

As far as hooking a gravel cleaner to it no you can't and don't understand why you would want to. With the gravel vac stick the tube in the tank give it a suck to get the sypheon going then drain into a bucket. Hopefully this answers your questions. As far as that being a good filter for the money this I don't know.

okay thank you, the reason why I asked about the gravel vac being able to hook up is because I saw someone do that and what it did was go in the cannister it cleaned the water out and shot it back into the aquarium so no water was wasted

Hmmm never seen or heard of that. However one of the main resons we do water changes besides to remove uneating food and poo is to get chemicals and such out of the water like nitrates. Hooking it up to the filter and having it shoot back in the tank will not get rid of these chemicals so there for its not a good idea.

oh. sounds right lol. the funny thing is that Ive had my aquarium going for about a month now, with 9 fish in it and the only time the water was cloudy was the first night I filled the tank and its been crystal clear ever since. Ive only done one water change, and Im going to get a gravel vac here tomorrow to clean the poo from the gravel

Don't use the looks of the water to determine if a water change is needed or not. As a rule of thumb you should do a 25% water change once a week. If you have gravel which I take it you do buy yourself a gravel vac. Take the clear tube/pipe part shove it down in the gravel once you don't see poo or food getting sucked up pull it out and shove it back in right next to it. Make sure the tube goes all the way to the bottom glass. Keep doing this until you have vac all you gravel. Usually by the time you have done that you will have taking out 25% of the water.

I hooked up a cheap gravel vac onto my FX5, just removed the bottom half of the strainer and slot the tube in. Depending on the inlet of your filter, you could do it too.

Well, that`s not exactly true.
You can use a canister as a gravel vac.
The Magnum350 even offered a vac kit as an option.
The idea being, you could clean the tank for as long as it took to get it clean, without having to keep an eye on water levels.
The idea of modding an operating canister to do vac chores along with basic filtration, it can be done, but I wouldn`t do it.
If you want an Uber vac find yourself a used canister and set it up as a vac only.
I`ve put together a couple of powered vac systems.

The above worked the best. Still use it.
Spin on water filter cartridge, a pump, and some pipe/hose.
What I like about this system is using the return flow to "blast" hidden gunk out of the rocks to get sucked up.
