I currently don't have any filter nor water softener in my house. I am planning to get a large filter and a high capacity water softener for the whole house.

Question:

Would the water softener have any impact on the fish? (Since you put salt in it)

Would this mean i do not necessary need an R/O water for discus?:)

I am on well water, too. Before I bought my big tank, I had a full tap water test and everything was deemed "okay" for the freshwater fish I was planning to host. My pH is high, but perfect for African cichlids. NOTE: My tap water is going through the softner system.

i dont think you put salt in the water when you use a water softener, theres a water softer pillows that soften the water, but they need to be regenerated with salt, the water softer machine will do this automatically and the water is wasted down the drain. you could not use it for any thing(drinking, plants waterings)if it had salt in it.there is also some other type of recharger that is not salt, that you can get if you dont trust the salt one ,ask thepeople that are selling you the softener and they sould say the same.
