I am looking for some solution to a filtering problem I am encountering. I have setup a 55 gallon aquarium that is half gravel, half water. The water is about 8 inches from the bottom, so about 1.5 feet from the top of the aquarium. I want to get something that won't drip water a foot and a half, causing a lot of noise, like a powerhead would. My fish are very small (<2 inches, some less than 1) so I don't think they could escape the pull of canister filter, especially if one became sick. Any ideas about what sort of filtration I should use?

Don't sponge filters require a pump? Wouldn't that generate a lot of noise?
As for an internal filter, would one fit in 6-8 inches of water? Could you name a few internal filters for me?
