I have been out of the big time fish game for a few years, been limited to a 29g until I found a 75 sitting in the garbage outside an animial hospital. Well that has gotten the fever started again. I will be getting a 72" tank, probably a 125 at income tax time and that should keep me happy for a bit. anyway, i have been seeing folks use smaller aquariums as some type of filtration device and i have an old 40b sitting in my shed that i may use for this purpose. can folks tell me ALL about this type of filter, how it works and how to build it please? if you have pictures that would be a major plus links too.
Thanks.

tell yourself. in the upper right corner of this page is a box to put text in with a magnifying glass next to it. type in sump, and click the magnifying glass and you will get 800+ pages of information. types, designs, successes, failures, issues, lessons learned.
why would you limit yourself to the info a dozen or so people are willing to dispense for such a generic question when you have access to hundreds of people's thoughts and ideas?

He didn't know what it was called.
Kinda hard to search for something when you're not sure what it is.

X2 Tons of great info here on MFK I have built two home made sumps, pvc overflows with accurate info on flow, proper pump sizing, head loss etc with all the info here on MFK.:headbang2

Thank you for the help. I am pretty mechanical, as I am an auto mechanic. I just was not sure of what they were called to make an effective search. My main thing was that I thought they were siphon powered and would suck your tank dry if power went out.

You could make it siphon powered, but simple overflow is probably better. You can use overflow boxes (which are siphon powered) but then you need to make sure you have a failsafe (holes drilled return pipes) to break the siphon if power or pump dies. Basically the holes should be drilled to where they break the siphon before the sump overflows.

Example I found online just now.

Check out glass-holes.com for very simple overflows. I have a couple of them and love the way they work. I also use old 55 gallon tanks off of craigs list for my sumps. Also look into filter socks. My last two sumps I set up with these and it was very simple.

Good luck!
