New to the site...

In your opinion is it necessary to get a canister Filter, I'm about to purchase a 75 gallon tank for 4 or 5 baby Reds and I read canister filters r the best but r a little costly. I don't mind spending the $$ but just wanted to know if they r worth it.

Thx 4 your help.

My first canister with afortable price would be a eheim canister. best and never had any problem with them.

next would be an rena xp3...

If you want to spend more and good are FX5 or wet/dry sump...are top best. IMO

my friend has a 350 biowheel and an xp3 on a 75 and his tank stays nice the canisters polish the water real well and I have also been a fan of the biowheels. I would say yes if you want crystal clear water.

you might want to get a canister with hang on filter like AC110 or emperor 400 or 2 canister.

piranha are messy eater, and produce a lot of waste especially when it grow up adult. the filtration the better.

Once those Ps get bigger you will need extra filtration. I would recommend multiple filters myself. There are lots of combinations you can go with, I like to use a xp3 for bio and add a Ac110 HOB for mechanical. using the HOB for mech works great because you can easily clean on a weekly basis which will greatly improve water quality.

biowheel Is the way to go SO easy to do water change no mess
just clean umpeller and change cartrege 2 things to do WOW :)

o yA WATER is mint condition with proper cleaning works veary well .

Wet/drys are the best but I'd always be affraid the sump would overflow while I was gone or something I run xp's on all my tanks except my biggest I'm going to put a fx5 and xp3 on it, can't here a thing and easy to clean keeps my water clear and clean I have a 240, 125 and a 55g I will be up-gradeing from my 240 to a 300 this spring got 8 Piraya's in there and they are growing fast and are very messy..........

A fluval 405 is easilly the best canister for tanks in the 60 to 100 gallon range. Fill all 8 chambers with bio-media... Ceramic rings are great...and use the stock foan pads for mechanical filtration.

High flow rate...quiet and reliable...

Here is what I do....I fill my Xp3's with crushed coral....The top, third level I fill with those Stars the RENA company makes....Mechanical filtration is always done by the trusted Aqua Clear(101) power filter models...
