Hi everyone. I was wondering if this is normal for a flowerhorn fish to do.
Every time I feed my flowerhorn regardless of what it is whether it be pellets, frozen, live foods he eat rushes to the top takes a nice mouthful then begin chewing. Within 5 seconds about 75 percent of his mouthful comes shooting out of his gills. Its like blow off valve for a car. He is the messiest fish i have ever seen every time i feed him my water gets so filthy. I know he is supposed to be messy but i have never seen anything like this before. ALL my other fish might have a little bit coming out of gills(small puff of pellet dust) but nothing like this. I Even tryed a goldfish and it was a Gold scale shower in my tank.

Is he just wasting food, sick? im confused any help would be appreciated
THanks

Try feeding a small amount at a time? When I used to feed my Flowerhorns nls, they would spit out 75% of it out their gills as well. As for the goldfish, stay away from those but yes it is normal for goldfish scales to leave the gills x.x

Smaller pellets bro. Hes chewing because he cant fit it down his throat. Get 3mm or smaller sinking pellets. They are small and hard so he should have no problem swallowing those, then just work up from there.
I would avoid what your doing now though. Hes not getting all the nutrients he could, plus fouling up his water. I know NLS and Hikari make some great small sinking pellets. Try cichlid bio-gold. Fish love those things. Or Omega one if you can find small ones.

Don't drop them all in at the same time. I feed my fish in little bundles of two or three pellets (of course, depending on the size of the fish relative to the size of the pellets).

I have tried all of what you guys have said. Keep in mind he is about 8 inches and im feeding him 3mm nls about 3-5 pellets at a time and it still happens. Maybe its normal i dont think its alot of the food coming out

SOunds like he's just a naturally very messy fish, with poor eating technique. 3mm pellets with a 8 inch FH is just fine.

The fish simply needs table etiquette lessons.

Sounds like there was some oscar cross-breeding somewhere in his bloodline. Probably begs for food all the time too. You are lucky, those are the best flowerhorns and are very rare.

haha thanks guy i guess ill just have to deal with it. i agree he is the coolest fish i ever had he often swims upside down the length of the tank funniest thing i ever seen.

Oh yeah...mine does it too. A complete slob!! But I dig it!
