just picked a sweet bargain off craigs list on a 29g with stand, whisper 30 filter, some big stones and some decorations all for $25. i think its a pretty good deal. but the tank they left filthy! its got that green algae like residue on it thats seems impossible to get off. so if anyone one knows of a good cleaner to get rid of this i would really appreciate it. cuz i wanna get right too my shelly tank project.

Vinegar and a razor blade. They also have some stuff called lime off made by Jungle that works pretty good. Someone once said they used CLR, but I dont know how safe that is.

pack of razor blazes or even better/safer a stiff 1" putty knife, can of beer (if your 21+ ;) ) and a can of old fashioned elbow grease:). ive left tanks the same way out of pure laziness, and it can be quite a process to get off sometimes.

never tried the vinegar thing, altho ive read it in quite a few posts now. give er a try....

all of the above just add a couple rools of paper towels

I have used baking soda for grit, distilled white vinegar for its acidic properties, and bleach for sterilizing. All safe if cleaned out thoroughly. Glass is pretty non-reactive, and whatever you are putting in won't leach into the silicone far enough that it won't wash out. If you use bleach, just make sure to fill up the tank afterwards and run a filter with lots of delchlor.

I've used razors for this and it works well, but paitence will be necessary compared to some of the other methods mentioned
