I have had my tank running for a little over 2 years. It had its up and downs and now is running smoothly. Until last month I have had my aqueon 55 filter with its intended internals. Cleaning the filter pads were annoying and they would never get clean. I switched to filter floss were the water comes into the box and 2 aquaclear 70 sponges in the 'slots.' I have not see any adverse effect on my fish with this switch, which leads me to thinking it as as efficient as before the switch. Cleaning is easier and its swish and squeeze in a bucket of tank water.

I am looking to switch around my fish and have more than I currently have in the tank. The tank is 55 gallon with 13 fish (which I will list at the end). I would like to make sure my filtration is more than enough for my fish before making the switch. I am trying to do this as cheap as possible.

My idea:
Aqueon 55 - Filter floss near the intake, aquaclear 70 sponge in the first 'slot', and aquaclear biomax in the second 'slot.'
Possibly a second Aqueon 55 or even a 50 with the same internals.

What do you think about my current set up?
What should I consider for my second filter? ( I can not spend the money on a canister )
