So I am getting a 100 gallon fish tank for pretty cheap on craigslist, and have no idea what kind of filtration to use. What does mfk recommend? My budget is about 200$. I can spend more but it would just mean I'd have to wait and save up before I can get it running.

Go used. You can pick up some excellent, used filters for under $200. I would suggest the following options:

1) Used Canister and a used HOB. For the Canister, Eheim, Fluval or Rena are recommended. For HOB, AC110 all the way. This combination, with just a little bit of luck will likely be right around $200.

2) Buy a used sump, or build your own. You would likely be under $200.

New tanks are fun :)

Congras man!
