I'm in the process of setting up a 20 gallon reef tank. I have the lighting and I'll have about 25lbs of live sand and 10 pounds of baserock and about 20lbs of cured Fiji live rock. I also have a new nano protein skimmer rated for 30 gallons. Besides a couple of power heads, should I go with a biowheel hang on filter or what else?

I'd stick to your protein skimmer and live rock myself. Bio-filtration is just going to become a nitrate factory, and unless you have a big refugium, or plan to do a LOT of water changes then I'd stay away from the bio-filters.

So nothing else huh? that sounds great to me!!! I'll only have 2 firefish and a small goby of some sort, besides the cleaning crew that is it. I guess its not really a reef tank because It will be a while before I try my hand at some corrals. That is unlease they just start growing off my live rock.

i agree 100% how ever i also like to use power heads mainly for water movement that a add a sponge filter on just to get some debris i clean the sponges every 3 or 4 days , i keep them hidden behind the rock i as well never put my hands in the tank i use gloves much like this, i just feel it helps keep any body oils or soap and what ever may be on my skin out

sounds just a little paranoid to me but hey, im reckless anyway.
yeah the rock itself is going to be a big source of filtration. if this is your first tank i recommend doing it bigger 20 is a little smalland the chems flux too rapidly. unless ur really devoted a larger tank would be better.

ps u can get more fish than that :D
