So im currently filtering a tank with 6 sponges (2 stacks) currently a flowerhorn grow out tank.

I have been using sponges for a long time and they do awesome but I wanted to collect the little particulates that are always moving around.

I'm thinking of adding a small canister filter like an eheim 250 but wanted to get some thoughts on this.

I would like to keep the sponges as they are very quiet and provide good oxygenation.

No HOBs tho, never had luck with those as they always end up getting super loud and splashing water sounds.

Are there maybe other cheap reliable alternatives that are silent?

Thanks!

This would do the job ^
I have found that internal filters of all kinds tend to be quieter than canister or HOB filters. Probably because the mechanics are inside the tank itself and surrounded by water and glass.

Might check it out thank you^^

Yeah, I've gone through some you setups (sump, hob, canister etc) but ended up with sponges as it was the quietest and simplest.

The only exception in my experience had been the eheims being incredibly quiet.

I had an fx6 for a while and boy was that loud.

Then again, I'm being very picky as the tank is in my home office so take that with a grain of salt lol

With micron filtration, you need a spare or 2 micron cartridges. The micron cartridge can be soaked overnight in a bucket of bleach to remove the dirt, and then soaked overnight in another bucket of plain water (with Prime). I used to use the Marineland Magnum 350 canister with a micron insert 20 years ago and that did clear up my oscar tank.
