I'm picking up a 180 g tomorrow and I'm thinking of using emperor 400 HOB filters for it. The reason for this is I like the bio wheels and already have a 75 g running 2 400's. I find them very easy to use and the little noise they make doesn't bother me at all. I just wanted some expert advice on how many I should use and if there may be any reasons not to use these? I really don't want to drill the tank either so that is another reason why I'm leaning towards the HOB 400's. I plan on having some large catfish in there and an arrow but nothing else planned as of now. Looking for opinions since this will be my 1st large tank. Currently I have 2 75 g's one with the 400's and the other with an Eheim 2217. What are your thought's and opinions?

Thanks

I would suggest a wet/dry filter with the overflow pre filter or one of the canister filters.I have a wetdry system underneath my 180 and a H.O.T Magnum on the back of it.I don't think the hang on power filters can adequately keep up with the waste build up on the bigger tanks.

Thanks for the info, the more research I do it seems like I have no choice but to go with a canister or wet/dry system. Seems like I would need at least 4 HOB filters and it still wouldn't be the best solution. Looking for opinions on what you guys would do in this situation or what you already have done.

I love HOB's!!

but with a larger tank you should go with an FX5, I just got one and am never turning back.. you'd be spending about the same amount of money anyway...

for a 180 id personally try the FX5 canister

One FX5 should be enough, though I'd add a second filter for redundancy, probably a smaller canister with finer filter media, or a second FX5 if you're rich.

Thank you for all of the suggestions. I have decided to go with an FX5 and will take your recommendations for a secondary filter. I feel more comfortable with a secondary filter.
