I'm setting up a my new 350g next week (96x24x36). I've got an Eheim 2260 and 2 FX5s for filtration. This should be plenty, even for a heavy bioload, correct?

I'm thinking of putting ONLY bio media (Fluval BioMax) in the Eheim and one fo the FX5s so I never (almost never) need to clean them, and filling the other FX5 with half bio and half mechanical (filter floss pads, etc). The half and half FX5 I'll plan to change every couple of months.

Does this sound like a good plan for sparkling water? Any advice appreciated. Thanks. :)

P.S. Couldn't do a big wet-dry due to a non-drilled acrylic tank with portal top, and due space considerations

i would have floss as a prefilter in all of the canisters.. just so they dont clog up with junk
:iagree:
Although you only intend to use them for biofiltration, they will nevertheless retain floaties. There is no way around it, they will also filter the water mechanically.

Sounds like your tank will have nice filtration

should be good with those canisters IMO though a large wet/dry would be alot better for a tank that size

You should be fine with what your planning. I have a fluval 403 filled 2/3 with Eheim Ehfilav an 1/3 BioMAX an sponge for added Bio on my 120.

If you didnt have the 3 canisters Id go with a big wet/dry.

Hi GBG, looks like you eventually went for the best of both world's eh? Good move.
As your gross litres are 1,362 with (even a spartan tank) perhaps 1,225 litres net and a net combined turnover of 6,900 litres per hour your turnover shall be approx. 5.63 x per hour (could be less obviously depending on head heights). I personally would aim for 10 x per hour turnover with 5 as minimum, but you have explained sump tank not practical and you are in excess of 5x so well done. Can't do more than the 3 monster filters you have. Although you say you don't plan on cleaning very often, I would divide you 2260 media up in nets or tights/pantyhose to enable easy removal from the "bucket" to clean them in cyle. Good luck with the tank/filters/fish.

Looks like you are on the right track for filtration.
I have heard good things about the Fluval FX5. I went to the
ACA's in Chicago this weekend and was able to see the Eheim Pro 3
and that canister is a true monster. I was truly impressed. :clap
However, the 2260 should be fine as well.

Thanks all. I realize that a big wet-dry would be the more practical and economical approach, but my tank set up just doesn't permit it. Mentzer thanks for the good advice re: cleaning the cannisters. :)

don't forget big frequent water changes big filters will be nitrate factories.
