filtration for 72 gallon tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
you can go cheap with a lot of things for your tank, but filtration should'nt be one. you don't have to spend a fortune. hang on's are not expensive and are easy to maintain. if a cheap light fails, your fish will be fine until you can get a replacement. if a cheap filter fails all your hard work could be for nothing just to save a few bucks.

X2 Maybe look into 2 Ac 110's for the tank you should be able to find them for about 50 dollars and under used and i think they are something like 60 dollars brand new on amazon, Or maybe even look on craigslist for a decent canister filter if you wanna go that route maybe a used fluval 405 for like 80 bucks or less. up 2 you

You can run "cheap" filtration on a lightly stocked tank. Two/three sponges can work. But filtration will all depend on your stock, feeding and water changing schedule. So, to answer OP's question, Yes the filters, power head would work for a lightly stocked tank.

P.S. the link doesn't work for me.

You can always try it but it mainly depends on what you are gonna stock it with as to how much filtration you should have and so forth

After reading about it a bit more it doesn't sound like a bad idea at all and you really wouldn't need much flow but thats up to you really. Good luck with it :D

Sweet! I was thinking do a layer of the blue foam, scrubbies and then a couple of bags of activated carbon. Should that be ok?

You shouldn't need carbon at all unless you have an odor from the water or yellowish colored water. And yeah Maybe prefilter like some poly fiber or even a finer mesh or something then blue foam scrubbies would work well to. But if you don't want to do a prefilter thats fine as well maybe just a sponge filter over the inlet of your powerhead would be best and Blue foam,Scrubbies will work fine if you don't do a prefilter.
