Filtration for 75 gallon severum tank

I recently setup a 75 gallon tank with 3 severums (green, turquoise and gold) in it. They are 5 inches, 2 1/2 and 4 inches.
Currently using a "modified" Penguin 375 HOB with 4 Aquaclear 70 sponges in it.

Do I need to add a canister filter or should I use a large sponge filter to supplement the Penguin 375 ? It is my understanding and past experience severums prefer not to have too much current.

I believe that canister outflow can be controlled from what I've read on the forum.

If it were me I would get a pair of Aquaclear 75s and call it a day.

Nearly bullet proof, if somehow you do need to replace a part Amazon has all of the parts individually. I always run pairs of filters. If for some reason one goes.down the other is still going while you repair the one went down.

I mean, you never need a canister filter to start with. XD It's not like canister filters necessarily would perform far better than any other filter system.

With that said, it really depends, if your HOB can handle 1ppm ammonia a day, then that's enough filtration and you don't need any supplementing. 2ppm would be even more than enough. 4ppm and yeah, you basically have zero worries.

Of course, if that's not something you determined prior to adding fish, it is a bit hard to check now.

More than the type filter, the key will be cleaning it regularly of gunk (which means how user friendly it is yo clean), and that gunk promotes nitrate, and then doing enough water changes to dilute nitrate to a healthy level.
One of the most common problems I see with severum, is HITH scarring, due to nitrates over 10ppm
About type of filers, I tend to agree with Jexnell, because of their ease in cleaning.
And that you can stagger the cleaning schedule between the two.

Thanks. The Aquaclear 70 doesn't fit on the Marineland 75 gallon tanks due to the thick brack bracing.

Thank you for the advice! In my prior tanks over a decade ago, I did clean my Eheim 2217 and Filstar canisters monthly...didn't understand why some would wait 3 months.

A pair of Aquaclear 110's would work and they will definitely fit on the tank.
