Hello!

I'm new to this forum, so please be patient while I learn my away around.

Somehow, I'm "this close" to selling my wife on scraping the entertainment center in the family room, and replacing it with a 50" LCD on the wall, with a 180 gal aquarium below it.
I'm looking into a 180 gal AGA to house a FW stingray, a Black Aro, and I don't know what else. This whole thing is hinging on her fondness for the stingray, and how much this is going to cost.
Anyway, what type of and how much filtration should I be looking for? The tank is from a reputable LFS, and it is currently not drilled, nor does it have overflows. Would a large Cannister Filter work, or should I have multiple filters?
Your suggestions are welcomed and appreciated.

You could run 2 FX5's by fluval, or comparable eheim canister filters would be your best bet. The big Eheim pro's...not sure of the numbers, can hold I think 6 liters of media in the biggest ones, while the FX5 holds 8 Liters of media. I'd just do some research on both of these companies, as they seem to be everyone's favorite canister filters on here.

first of all welcome to the forum...
if you do not want to drill the tank i would put an eheim 2260 (the large bucket filter holding massive amounts of media) and an fx 5. the 2260 is not cheap but then again you are not going to have cheap fish from what i read on your thread. the fx 5 is better at mechanical. the 2260 while good at mechanical; is better at bio..

one last thing rememeber that a 180g would not house your fish for life.... and do not overstock... since these fish produce a lot of waste and would strain the filtration...even if you add more filters its not advisable to overstock

2078 3e holds 8 liters of media

2080 holds 12 liters of media

2050 classic holds 12 liters of media

and 2060 and the 900 gallons per hour 2062 hold 18 liters of media.

2080 eheim will process 123 PPM of ammonia every 24 hrs, fluval fx5 will process 37 PPM of ammonia. Eheim will cost more and process more biological load than fx 5.

Fx5 manual shows 6.9 liters of media space.....

It is always a good idea to go with multiple filters, in case of failure you will not have your tank completely crash. I myself have 2 xp3 canisters and 2 AC110s power filters on my heavily stocked 180g tank. The canisters are set up for biologial filtration and the AC110s are for mechanical and cleaned on a weekly basis.

A 180g 6' x 2' x 2' will eventually be to small for a black arowana. I think if you post the question in the stingray forum, the experienced keepers there will tell you the same regarding stingrays.

Wow I was looking at new canisters the other day and thought I had covered every eheim and fluval there was and the most media capacity I saw was the FX5 at 8 liters, and a Eheim pro at 6 liters, how much does the 2078 3e cost?

For a 180 I'd say Eheim 2260 or 2262. Stick with the Classic series.

Have fun,

My vote goes for a sump. Just get the tank pre drilled with dual overflows and your set. Buy a pump and a sump, plumbing tools and your pretty much done.

If you dont like the idea of a sump then 2 decent canisters should do the trick. Eheim has always been a favorite.

No that's wrong I think the FX5 would have 8 liters of media including foam.
for eheim pro media ratings including foam check their website.

Pro3e is only 50 NZD cheaper than the Pro 3 but is the newer model.
Also location means a lot: Eheim Pro 3e in NZ is 900 NZD and the same model in Jakarta Indonesia Eheim store is 2.2 million RP which is 300 NZD.

I think I see where you got the 6 litre figure from. The orginal eheim Pro, That was around the time fluval was making 3 series. Eheim now manufacture and sell Pro Pro II and Pro3 series from Germany. the 3e is 2007 model.
