Hey Ppl... my previous post was about my new 3 inch RTC and what i should be feeding him.. now about filtration.. the tank i hold him is around 50 gallons and with some baby oscars in there the tank is getting messy.. i threw in a internal filter with a 400 liters per hour turn over / roughly 135 gph turn over.. my questions are
a) is it ok having an internal filter for a small RTC
b) would this filter be a little too powerful cos i find the baby oscars swimming against the current / or the sucking action of the filter.. where as my rtc seems to be right near the filter.. is that ok.. i've switched it off at the moment.. i'm just being paranoid if he is getting sucked in by the filter..

and i'm giving away my baby oscars (i've been unlucky with them always.. dont ask why.. long story :) )

please let me know bout the filtration ppl.. cheers..

With RTC the bigger the filter is better. They dont stay at 3" for long! Before you know it they are 13", 23" lol

You should really have enough filtration for at least a 1' rtc sense if you order it tomorrow by the time it gets delivered he will prob be about that long. Lol

I would say 10x turn over. It's about what I run on my pond with about 560,000sq in of filter media.

hmm turn over rate and filter for a rtc, i would say your gonna want to be in the market for a 3k gph pump and alot of filter media...... and by the way, give the rtc a cave to rest in it will break the current for him so he doesnt have to fight it, and TURN THE FILTER BACK ON when you turn it off the b.b. will starve to death.

i would personally keep the filter you have and get a fx5, plenty of filtration and it will last with that powerfilter till he is about 10-16 inches long. also i would add a cave that the entrance is facing the opposite way of the flow, as posted earlier it will give him a place to rest away from the current. i would also add a big sponge filter or two to aid in biological bacteria growth

ha ha ha you guys are sure scaring the hell outta me.. i just went and checked him.. he seems a lil bigger already.. popped in a broken flower pot and he has is cave.. actually i think i plugged off the heater by mistake.. the filter was on through out and all is well.. thanks guys.. and like most indians i live with my folks.. so i've jus got the green for another pond,a larger one in the garden for my arowanas.. so in goes Davy Jones (thats what i call him.. i hope its a he) thanks again people.. :D
