Filtration for a 3700 gall shark tank

Depending on set up, you'll need heat and chilling abilities.

What is the shape of the tank and will it be on the floor or elevated? I've got a couple of very good systems I can suggest for you based on how you answer those questions.

I'd plan for at least 3 pumps:
1/2 - 3/4 hp pump running a canister/cartridge filter (or sand/bead filter).
1/2 - 3/4 hp pump running a second canister/cartridge filter (or sand/bead filter).
Pump to run a pt skimmer (or skimmer/ fluidized bed combination).

Have one of the canister filters dump into a bio tower above the tank, and gravity feed back into it.
Have the second canister filter return with a couple of jets so you can direct flow where you need it.
Pt skimmer would be easier to use if you had a sump... but set it up higher than the tank so it can gravity feed back in.

I'll have a better answer later.

Fluidized bed is a tower with media in it acting as surface area for aerobic bacteria. It's part of the biological filtration. A cheaper way to do it is with a large biotower. But if you have the budget, fluidized beds are great. Just make sure you don't lose prime on the pump and have the media siphoned backwards into the PVC and pump impellor. That sucks to clean out.... take my word on that. Haha

RK2 actually has a fl bed unit that matches their big pt skimmers very well. I run one on my 3700 - ironically. Also running twin Jacuzzi SherLock 200 cubic ft canister filters and a single SherLock 120 cuic ft canister (each run with a 1 hp pump). The skimmer/fl bed is run with it's own pump. All of that is based off the sump.
A secondary filtration unit pulls right from the tank and returns right to the tank. It's an old school 4 pack of 160 cubic ft canisters running off a 1.5hp pump. It's mostly for extra movement in the water and a little extra mechanical filtration.

This one is actually a different system... it's the mirror image of the tank using the first two pics. I just posted it to give an idea of over all size.
