I have a 40g long 48x12x16 with 15 juvenile mbuna and 1 bristlenose. Right now I'm running two sunsun 302's and an aquaclear 70. My plan is to declutter some. I want to swap the two sunsuns for a single canister. Would swapping both to a 303 or 304 be better. Leaning more towards the 304.

Also saw they have a newer model 704 anyone have experience with this one?

Your AC70 is giving 300/40 = 7.5 x turnover /h. I use that filter on a 33 gallon myself. I don't know about Sunsun 302 personally but I see on line that it is rated 265gph so 265/40 = 6.6. Total between the two is 7.5+6.6 = 14.1 x turnover/h!

Most people strive for around 10 times/h so why not just stick with AC70 and one Sunsun 302?

The sunsuns 265gph is running empty it pushes nowhere near what the 70 does that's why I was asking. I know the 304 says 560gph but again from experience maybe 75% of that after media maybe less.

Okay. so even if the SunSun 302 is only pushing 3x turnover and not 6.6, that is still a total of 10x per hour which I feel is plenty for a tank that size. I don't mean to talk you out of more filtration but for a tank that size you have enough.

Set the second SunSun aside as a spare and use the money saved by not buying a new filter for other fish supplies or take your spouse/roommate/significant other, out for dinner for tolerating your hobby!
