I'm setting up an African Cichlid tank in a 55 gallon (208 liters). There will be about 20 or so Cichlids in the tank.

I'm most likely going to purchase a Rena XP3 Canister filter, but will probably need a HOB filter as well.

Any suggestions for what filter(s) I should get for the setup I am making?

Why do you want a HOB??? I took mine off because I thought it was an eye soar.

The Xp3 should be great for biological filtration. If I were going to augment it with another filter it would be a Magnum 350 or Magnum 250. They are not much in the way of a biological filter but great water polishers. A Magnum would compliment the Xp3 which is a great bio filter but not much in the way of water polishing. Just my opinion though... I know the AquaClear's have a very large fan base.

I have a hi-dollar Eheim Pro III on my 110g (Rena Xp4 was my second choice at the time)... the Eheim is great filter but pricey... if I were going to do it over again I would seriously look at the Chinese filters on ebay.

Since I started using a wet/dry sump I think canister filters are over rated. My Magnum 350 will stay though.
