I just bought three new tanks, two 30s and a 20, and I'd really like to find a filtration option that doesn't require a bio-wheel filter for each one (my other three tanks all have a filter on the back or a canister filter). What do those of you with multiple tanks recommend?

I plumbed all of my tanks together on a central filtration setup with a sump to filter the system. This is what you would have to do without putting a filter on every tank.

One other option is to run sponge filters and an air pump. This would filter multiple tanks without requiring drilling the tanks.

Thanks. Is there anyway to use a sump system without drilling, something that would be similar to a canister filter, or would that just be too complicated?

could get a overflow box.

You could get an overflow box, but you would need one for every tank.

There is also the DIY overflow option...build one yourself.

That's an option. Basically, I want to avoid having to plug in multiple filters and heaters. If I can have everything coming out of one sump it would make the set up a lot simpler.

Feel free to check out the DIY forum. There are a bunch of setups to look at. You might find something you like about all of them. Then you can design something that works specifically to what you want.

im working on that exact thing right now, and have some general info if you want to check out my thread

Don't forget the big problem with one filtration system is that disease spreads throughout the tanks if something nasty gets in. A Q/T tank can help stop this problem.

I run separate systems due to placement of the tanks in my house, but would love to set one up.

Good luck keeps us posted.
