I hope I don't need to put this in DIY. Sorry if I do.
So here's the situation. My canister filter is probably about to crap out on me. If not, it's at least bugging the hell out of me. It works fine but it's making this horrible grinding noise. So I need some help. I want to : A- fix the canister or B- make a DIY sump. I would love some input on either option. Or a better option. I just need the cheapest and most efficient route possible.

For those of you giving advice on a sump I have a standard 75gal. It's a Tanganyikan cichlid tank that is horribly understocked but will eventually be slightly overstocked.

If you need any more info let me know.

Thanks in advance.

what kind of canister filter is it? you can remove the impeller and see if it is damaged or if there is some debris in there. impeller should be relativity cheap to replace.

Why risk repairing it. All the time effort and worry about it breaking down.....
U may as buy an fx5 which is affordable compared to buy eheim, and will provide adequate filtration for your tank.

What filter is it? Manufacturer

its an older cascade model. 1000 maybe?

I haven't taken it apart yet for fear of completely breaking it myself without a back up.

If a filter starts making noise it's generally a impeller issue. Either it's clogged up or worn. No big deal replacing it. They just pop out.

As regards to the FX5, it's a electricity eater. 55W as compared the 35W of the comparable Eheim 2080. You can get them for about the same price (249€) delivered. UK and the rest of Europe. PM me and I'll send you the website where you can order it. You'll still have to buy the filter materiel but the FX5 comes without it as well.
