Working on plans for an 8x4x4 tank with attached sump and wanted to toss out a couple of ideas. Use a simple overflow so as not to worry about power outtages. Plumb the return pump directly through the sump back into the tank near the bottom. On opposite side use a drain in bottom corner with a valve. Background will be constructed so as to slope toward drain corner. When I need to clean debris just open valve and all will be sucked out quickly. Trying to make this as simple and fool proof as possible. All suggestions, comments, refinements or criticisms welcome.

How about a diagram so we're on the same page (nothing fancy, paints ok)?

OK, hopefully this works.

I wouldn't do it. Even if you use check valves then you still run the chance of overflowing the sump and losing your fish. I wouldn't do it like that.

Are you talking about back flow through the pump?

Anyone else think this will or will not work?

I believe he is.

You'd be better off making the wet/dry filter or w/e filter your using a little higher, than jsut use a elbow to make the flow at the bottom, that way the water wont travel into the filter.

When I shut my pump off during water changes the sump stills fills from the overflow not the pump when shut off. Didn't know the pumps would backflow, is it all of them or just certain brands? What about check valves? How about the drain idea for the opposite side? As said trying to make this simple and idiot proof. Just hoping they don't start making better idiots.
