well im trying to set up my filtration and get everything ordered in this week. its for a 400 gal tank with a 240gal sump. the sump i would prefer to keep filter media out though so that it will be usuable fish space. i still need one more idea to add though. so far i think im going to go with 3 30gal drums. first drum will be a bio tower filled with bio balls then goes into the sump. second will be a k3 reactor then goes into the sump. third drum is where im striking out at. i would like to have all 3 different. so what are some of your ideas that you would think to make this filtration complete?

i also have a 6' long window where the tank will be close to so i think im going to add a ledge to it and run a plant box the length of it so i can have a good plant filtration area as well.

Sounds cool, the plant Box will be sick. What about mechanical filtration? You could just do a few layers of filter floss and then sponges. It would keep the water really clean. In my sump I have white filter floss, a more durable blue filter floss, 2 layers of sponges, then bioballs, pot scrubbers, and lastly some shredded plastic media. Or something cheap and different that you could do would be lava rocks. They are super cheap when bought in bulk and they are almost exactly the same thing as ceramic noodles/rings. Although I'm not sure if they would affect the ph but I used to have a few large rocks in my old tank and everything was fine.

Thanks vanimal the mech is going to be a combo of socks and floss and eventually a sand or bead filter. Also measured the window and will only have about 3' useable space on the window but can still make it work just wider.

Anyways I think there are probably things better than lava rock just have to figure out a way to set it up.
