Filtration Noob

Well, Im planning a future 150+ gallon tank and I'm not well versed in filtration, so i have a few questtions. Whats the difference between chemical and mechanical filtration. How exacltly does and over flow work the ones built in the tank. Also is there a wrong way to build a sump tank. Thankyou.

Chemical is like with purigen and charcol and other "chemicals"

Mechanical is to get free floating debris out of the water. Eheims are good at this.
