The school i will be going to next year, Tabor Academy im massachusets, has a 1000 gallon acrylic tank:drool: that was donated to them some years ago. It is just the tank and the stand and since i mentioned fish keeping in my application essay the head of the biology department talked to me about turning it into a reef aquarium (they already have a 180 gallon reef tank and a 100 gallon jellyfish tank). i was wondering what sort of filtration+lighting would be used for a tank this size. I tried to design a filtration system that uses daily water changes (the bio-lab is right on the ocean and has salt water pumped in). the water is pumped from the main tank into a smaller fiberglass tank that will serve as a refugeum on steroids. it would have Chaetomorpha Algae and red mangroves in it as well as a small mangroce like echo-system. 30 gallons water from the bay would be pumped into a 40 gallon tub where it would be heated to the tempature of the main tank then 30 gallons of water would be emptied from the refugium and the ocean water added after an hour to simulate tides. Probaly a lot of problems but thats why im posting it pleasehelp me!

SWEET, Go with some HPS or Metal halides for the lights. Love the look. As far as filtration that is a bit out of my league but I reccomend a big sump with lots of live rock and UV action.

Ocean water isn't always the best water to use in a reef tank. There is a lot of "unknowns" in natural ocean water. Unless you're pulling it in from miles off shore, I would suggest not using it.

ditto on that one
