Currently I use 2 fluval fx5s on these tanks, with a SEIO 1500 for additional water movement.

I have set up Eheim 2213 with UV. sterilizers (Turbo twists 18 watt). In these I use no sponge , just bioballs for additional biological filtration. My issue is that today I went to change out the bulb on the uv so took it apart and the filter was jammed full of crap. This made me wonder whether I am just doing more harm than good with the extra filter. I am wondering whether I should just ditch the canister and hook it up to a mag 3 or something.

By the way there are a pair of rays in the tank

The uv should have very good mechanical filtration before it, as should the biomedia in your ehiem, so with the way it's running, I'd say neither the UV or canister is running like it should since its all getting clogged/coated with gunk. Prefiltering would be good.

Sometimes the simplest things things don't come to mind...a prefilter.

Thanks I will go put one on.
