Well since I have joined I have seen people with a crazy amount of filtration on their tanks.

I am sure I am under filtered, but almost a week after I added my oscar I have had cloudy water. (what a surprise)

I do my water changes twice a week, but I don't do any more than 25% both times.

I only have one power filter, but my question is should I get another power filter for about 40 sumthin bucks or just go all out and get the canister filter, but this might require some time to save up on my part.

so power filter now...or...canister filter later

My tank as of now is potentially overstocked. When my fish grow some more I will need to trade in a couple or get another tank.

oh and I think the gph on my filter now is about 350 maybe? I am not quite sure. maybe it is 450 though. what should I aim for?

save up and get the can

you should be shooting for ten times your tank size per hour so 750 would be about right.

Both....Extra HOB now and a good cannister later. Of course you could save yourself a LOT of money and just run a Hydro5 air driven sponge filter. (about 25.00 with air pump.)

i'd accually do both, get another powerfilter for now, to keep water clean until you can buy the canister. and when haveing a tank that is overstocked, overfiltration is a must so the 10x turnover may need to be stronger like say 1000-1250 gph.

i agree thten times is a base line minimum. not the standard buy any means

for example i have a FX5, Xp3, and 2 Emp 400's one my 125
on the 55 their is a Xp3 and EMP 400
and on the 38 i have an EMP 400 and 280

alright thanks, that makes sense. I figured thats what everyone on here would say too. I will gather up some money and hopefully get a canister before christmas.

I have one tank that I believe is a little over filtered (for the moment) and that is my 55. I have 2 biowheels on it and while it doesn't have a 10 times turnover rate, the only fish in there are 2 flowerhorn fry, so the bioload is quite low. I will probably end up getting a canister filter for this tank as well then.

just to make sure, some good canister filter brands are eheim and fluval correct? what about rena?

i have 2 aquaclear 110's on my 75 and it is as clear as a glass of water. i have a full bag of activated carbon and a full bag of aqua pure by HBH, plus the bag of bio-max that comes with the filters. i do weekly 25% water changes and i always remove any food that my fish havent eaten about 15mins after i feed them. these filters are amazing for their $40 price tag (petsmart)

Also, you can change alot more than 25% of the water at a time.
