So I am looking for filtration for a 75, but am on a budget. I have an unused three drawer tote stand that I have been thinking about making into a DIY sump/wet dry filter using PVC for an overflow. My issue with this is my worry about flooding my house. Or I can purchase some filtration, in which case I have a budget of about $60. Under other circumstances, I would just wait until I saved a bit more and buy a nice big canister filter, but I need this to be running within the next week. I am thinking about a pair of Marineland Penguins rated for 200GPH each or a SunSun canister rated for about 300GPH.

Considering you need it going soon.....get a decent hob off of amazon for around $35 then do a sponge filter power head combo..get the power head used or on amazon I

I like the 2 penguins for your budget. They work great.

I have scoured Craigslist for filters. I have a few unanswered emails about selling filters separately from tanks and some older posts that may be sold already. There are a few available for decent prices, but are two hour drives away (four hour round trips) and the gas costs would put my over budget. Considering the need to have it running by this upcoming Sunday, I need to be ready to pull the trigger on an online order if none of the Craigslist ads pan out.

I have always been a fan of my AquaClear HOBs, but Marineland is a great HOB too. I just figure that having extra media in the ACs would be better than just the bio wheel and possible carbon filter (which I don't use unless absolutely necessary). Plus I have considered using one of the ACs as an open top pothos plant holder for a bit of nitrate removal.

go for a sponge filter. You can get one or two for dirt cheap, and that will handle your bioload.

My 75 has been running for 2 years now on this Emperor 400 alone. It has 2 bio-wheels and there's actually space to add ceramic media also.

I could do that too. I hear good things about the Emperor series. I just thought of doing two HOB filters for added flow and if one fails for some reason, the tank wouldn't be without any filtration.
