I am looking at either revamping my filters or possibly trying something entirely new.

currently 90g: ac 110, fluval C4, my other 306 broke. so I'm down to 760 gph here.
currently 110g: ac 110, fluval U4, fluval 305 est. 1050 gph

I guess the question is, in planning for the future I would like a more streamline option. Filtration and plumbing are not my utmost specialty. Frankly I like the FX5, but its overall intrusive size doesn't work well for my tanks in an already over crowded office. Also I've found out the hard way my black sand bottom of my 90 has totally busted my 306 cani. Not even sure how but it just leaks now and all the seals seems intact.

If I opted for a canister filter in the 3-- ish range is there one the group would suggest? Also, there's no way I can create a system type filter for both my tanks for a reasonable amount of money? Can I have 1 pump 2 intake 2 outs?

I WOULD JUST ADD....1 big hob to each tank ..my favorites are ac110 and aqueon75...getting into big cans is expensive....for multiple tanks on 1 filter,,,, a big sump is a better option

+1 by far the cheapest, from what I can see all you should need is 1 AC110. I tell you what that little C4 will suprise you don't underestimate it, I love mine. I'd say your 90 is fine if anything add a sponge with a powerhead. On the 110 replace the U4 with a 110 and again there is always the additional sponge if you want more. Any other canister or sump is going to be larger than your current 05,06 filters. That sand can be ruff stuff, I'm still using the old style gravel for like you I have way to much $$$ in my filters to tear them up? Your 306 can't be that old three year warranty on it. Hagen could not help you out? They have a head kit for like $27.00 that includes shaft, impeller, cover, and gaskets other possibility?

Tip: Marineland sells a two ply blue and white fiber like they use in the penguin cartridges only in a large sheet. In the front red box under the trickle there is room to add 1 or 2 mechnical pads I just cut to size(it's like $4.00 and would make ten or more of the size you would use. It doubles your mechnical on the C4.) I run that red box with Biomax and those pads on top. all you do is rinse, it,s even easier to maintain than the AC in my option. Good Luck....keep posted on updates

good luck ...I kinda think Synomal hit it just right ...you should be ok with 1 more big hob...even a big sponge filter for the 90 (run it on air or a really small powerhead for that setup)
