with pond size, at what point do you not have to worry about. i ask because i see ponds in the woods that are like 60x60 and the fish are thriving in it. i will be moving to my dads very soon in west virgina, he has 15 acres there and im gonna try and build a pond, but i wanted to go MONSTER, like 200x200 and about 5-10 feet deep. i want something large enough i could stock native fish, like channel cats, both lmb and smb, blue gills. would it be fine to dig it up, let rain water fill it, thought that might take a year or so and add fish?

Might take longer than a year....

Search farm ponds. You will fiind a lot of info. you will need for filters, areation, etc.

:mwave:

Is it done yet?! Oh, sorry...I got a little carried way :D.

THere isn't a size limit where you don't have to do anything unless you have free-flowing water as in a spring or stream (then you still have to worry about contamination :nilly:).

Ponds run the risk of becoming stagnate (too shallow) and striated (too deep) w/o external circulation.

There is a great thread here somewhere that a guy did just like you want.

Is there any free running water on the land?

First thing you do when you get to your Dad's is make some friends with heavy equipment :headbang2. It can be done with a tractor with a backhoe and a blade, but a dozer would be nice.

If you plan the pond properly Mother Nature will take care of a lot of things.

Get in touch with the local Agricultural Extension Agent & check with the DNR / Fish & Game Commission in the area, they will be able to give you alot of local / pertinent help. We can give generalities but they know the area better (ground & ground water conditions, types of fish that can be kept successfully there etc). Also talk with the local long time farmers in the area, sometimes they are your best source of info on the land and water issues.

Keep us posted what you find out from the locals and on your progress,

Dr Joe

i do know that when it rains , there is a lil stream that flows down his mountain. it is only there when it rains.

he bought the land of his neighbor witch owned 300 acres and he has said there used to be a few springs on the land.

and for the creepy factor, about a mile into the woods my dad owns a lil cemetery, a family of like is is burried there, just odd.
