I have a 120 gallon tank with 6 piranha. The filter thats on it is a Aquatop cf500 with the built in uv light. I have sand as the substrate and im planning on changing it to gravel this weekend. When i bought the tank it came with a under gravel filter but since I as planning on using sand i didnt use it. Would it be worth my time to set it up when I take out the sand this weekend? Not as a replacement filter but just as a second one. I have the marineland maxi jet 1200 powerhead that i can think will work for the undergravel filter but im not sure how to set it up. ive never used an under gravel filter so i dont know much about them. Do i have to clean under them?

PERSONALLY I would not use the ugf ... they aren't"bad" ..but they are a pain to keep clean.. an easier inexpensive solution ...would be a couple of big sponge filters(ATI hydro 4 or 5)run them on a powerhead and point the powerhead output at the input of your can. filter.... this should be plenty of filtration for your tank... GOOD LUCK...

You can't use under gravel filters with sand, it will fall through.

ok thanks guys i think im going to leave the ugf out. my filter doesnt seem to work good but i think its because some sand gets in it. its not a lot but theres always some in it. When i change the sand out to gravel this weekend all clean the filter out really good and if i cant tell a big difference ill to the sponge filter. thanks for the help
