I'm in the planning process for my 135, and was hoping for feedback for a few ideas on filtration. I also have a 90 gallon heavily rocked and heavily stocked African tank that could use some improvement in the filtration department.

The 90 is currently filtered by an XP3 and a penguin 330. No problems, and seems to be doing fine, but the fish are getting bigger, and I think I could use more filtration. I was going to add another XP3 and remove the 330. I realize that it only gives me a net gain of 20 gph, but I think the XP3 does 2x the filtration of a 330.

I am planning on doing a DIY overflow (dual 1") and sump combo on the 135. Not sure of final stocking plans yet, but I know that there will be at least two large Rotkeils and probably a larger pleco or two. Maybe a Uaru, and probably a bunch of tetras. I have two options for the sump. I have a spare 20H and a spare 40L sitting around that could easily be converted to sump duty. I know that the 40 would give me 2x the room for bio media, but it would also take up 2/3 of the room under the tank. Using the 20H would give me more room, but lots less filtration.

I'm planning on using a quiet one 4000 as the pump, and either putting the penguin 330 from the 90, OR buying an emperor 400 and leaving the 330 on the 90.

Thoughts? TIA
