A few years ago I purchased a "column" tank for our office. Its dimensions are 30" x 18" x 24", approximately 56 gallons. It was sold to me as an Oceanic but it appears based on the dimensions that maybe it's a Marineland/Perfecto tank? Anyway, I digress...

Since we moved our office, it's just been sitting in my garage collecting dust. I'd like to use it, but the tank has an awkwardly-placed center brace that runs from the tank front to back, and this does not allow for a HOB-style filter. We used two smaller HOBs at the office but they didn't provide much water movement and I was afraid of dead zones in the tank.

How would you filter this tank? Of course, it was sold to me with an undergravel filter, but I refuse to use those. I'm guessing my best bet at getting good circulation would be a canister. What size would you recommend? Unfortunately it's not the model with the built-in overflow.

The filtration would kind of depend on what you plan on putting in the tank, but I think a fluval 405 or similar sized eheim would be sufficient for most of the stocking options in that sized tank.

It'll just be a pair of smaller SA cichlids and maybe some tetras as dithers. Nothing major or overstocked. I'm thinking, at least in terms of circulation/water movement, that a canister with a vertical spray bar may be my best bet.
