so i would like to build a cold water river, its only a 30 gal tank, the idea is to have my over hanging filter on one side of the tank, and on the same side of tank the sand would be realy high and gradually sloping down, into a pool of water...now my idea is on the over hanging filter to connect a hose from the input tube threw the sand across the bottom of the tank into the pool of water so that it draws water from one side of the tank and pushes it down the "river".. now i dont think this will work, i dont think the filter will be powerful enough to draw water from that far. the other end of the tank is 36" away, is there a simpler way i could do this? , there is a diagram attached to this post if you need to see what im talking about

powerheads..... lots of powerheads on on side of the tank

lol oh yah i got that part figured out, i just dont know how im going to do the filtration, i want it hidden as much as possible so i dont have a bunch of hoses sticking in and out of the water, i just cant seem to figure out how to move the water from the "deep" end of the tank to the top of the "river" i set up the tank today, just water, and the water level is realy high, the filter isnt strong enough to pull the water up. any ideas are welcome

you should get a spraybar and get a 500 gph pump and that should get plenty of current. if you need more pressure, i was thinking you could possibly experiment with gluing pressure washer nozzles to the spraybar. I am pretty sure you could get some nice currents with that

yah i was going to go with 2 or 3 power heads, just need to figure a way to filter this tank..thanks for the ideas

I looked at your bitmap, what's the plan to be able to hold all the sand in place with the water flowing down it like that?

You could get an external pump and drill a hole on the backside of the tank close to the bottom, this would get rid of any hoses in the tank. Have the pump to a old HOB maybe? put some filter media in it/let it create the waterfall.

You will deffinately need prefilter for your pump, since using sand.

You can always run pipe under the sand too....

well in the map i didnt put in any decorations, i know that sand will easily get blown down stream...so i was going to layer the top of the sand with drift wood, slate rock, and round rocks. more heavily decorated like that near the top where the current will be stronger, and then further down the river i would have drift wood and plants and more rock, im thinking that might work. you only learn threw experiance so well see what happens i guess

your plan will work fine as long as you have enough water in the tank. So that the filter can overcome the head pressure.

It doesn't matter where you have the inlet. It can be 200 feet away and it will be the same as 2 inches. As long as the water level is up close to the filter. Head pressure is only vertical and not horizontal.

i would add a vertical pipe to the end where the filter draws from so that the end let will not suck sand up.

The sand is going to build up on the opposite side of the tank from the outlets. Water will not flow from shallow to deep without eroding the bank.

You'd have to epoxy up a gravel bank shell, with an intake underneath, running back to the HOB/PowerHead side. If you did it right you could fill the underside with media and use it for a bio-filter as well...;)

You could make the shape of the "gravel shell" any size you want...

yea i agree 100%

I did not see the sand part. It may be a bit better with gravel but with time what zen is saying will happen to any substrate.
