Filtration "?"

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hi and welcome to MFK :)

(I assume #80 means 80 gallon?)

Simply from a filtration aspect, it depends on the size of the fish. It's hard to say if you have enough filtration or not with what little is known. The only true way to tell is by testing your water frequently and monitoring your basic water parameters. Then, it's just a matter of how often a water change is needed to keep these levels under control.

If your ammonia levels are constantly running high, then no, you don't have enough filtration. If you have to do more than weekly water changes to keep your levels under control, then that's your call...but, in my opinion, that's too often. Therefore, again, not enough filtration.

Your post does warrant a question back...what size are the inhabitants? 50 little ones in an 80g as a grow out tank is no problem. 50 adult Exodons is a bit much. What size are the fish you're keeping?

Again, welcome to MFK :)

6 of them are 3" and the rest are 1.5-2.5". I perform 25-30% bi-monthly water changes. I notice that they tend to lose their appetite for 1-2 days initially after each water change. The only thing I add is salt after the water change. I will get some test kits for water parameters. Thanks for the warm welcome and the thorough reply.

actually, if your ammonia levels are running high, (and of course by "high" i mean, more than absolutely none), it means your tank was not properly cycled, or has since lost the bacteria colonies, and needs to be re-cycled.

in regard to the initial question, based solely off of the numbers. yes, that should be ebough filtration. however, it really depends on how you set up your filters for mech/bio filtration.
as long as your readings are consistent, you will be fine.
