Welcome Axle,

There are a bunch of thread here on this.

They can work great, especially if your bio-material is overworked or the bio-load fluctuates some.

It just depends on how far you are willing to go, some stick a couple of pathos or lucky bamboo in their sump and they have a refugium. Others put in substrate, several types of plants and lighting.

It does depend on how well the bio-filter in the sump is already working.

For a 300g tank a 75g -100g sump is about right. 1/3 filter/bio-material, 1/2 refugium, and the rest is a place to put the return pump. :D

thanks, the refugium is set up with a section for bio balls one for the mudd with anachris and foxtails and one for the return. I am jsut rying to figure out if it would be better to add another sump or a wet dry. I only have the one sump and it is about 42 gallons wich i know is to small. any other suggstions I would appreciate

On a 300g tank, a second or third filter is not a bad idea. If you have the space another wet/dry system is cheap & best, or a couple of cannister filters, one set up for mechanical filtering and one for biological.
