Fin nip-safe tank mates 4 betta

Looking to take my best plakat (game lineage) and set him up in my unused 55 with a nice sandy bottom and structure. I would ideally also put in a school of some type of tetra or barb. The caveat is that I also would like to do either a pictus or Asian bumble bee cat for “bottom of the water table” inhabitant.
Any ideas on a schooling fish that A. Wouldn’t fin nip the betta, and B. Wouldn’t be on the menu for the cat.
I’ve considered keeping the betta in its 10 and doing tiger barbs, the Asian bumble bee, with a Guarami. And I’ve also considered scrapping the cat for a shoal of Corys and a large school of neons in with the betta.
Any input and or advise is appreciated.

Nah get some cherry barbs as they are less aggressive than tigers

It's a possibility, but my pictus was never interested in eating other fish, I bet if you put the cherry barbs in a few days earlier all should be well

maybe some tetras? most of them will tear fins though. definitely not tiger barbs. I would recommend hastatus cory but the catfish.... if you give up the catfish you'll get a way better selection of schooling fish. I personally like Brochis species. Like the Borchis Splendens.

Asian BB cats are wrong. Nasty little blighters IME. Beautiful but deadly to anything that will fit in their mouth. Gold barbs should work just fine for a shoaling fish.
