The dorsal fins on my geophagus look kinda sickly. In between the spikes(sorry, don't know the scientific term) the finnage looks like it is torn but it is like that on the entire dorsal. Is this a type of fin rot or something else?

Tankmates are other geos, Red Hook SD, C. Loaches.

Do the fins have white ragged edges? If so, yes, it is finrot. Water changes are the only way to deal with this.

The dorsal fin edge does not have any white on it. The finnage between the dorsal spikes do not go all the way to the top of the dorsal, make sense?

They have not always been this way, that is why I'm concerned.

Pics? I have trouble picturing out the whole thing.

Ok, I found a pic from Rapps website that is similar to what I'm talking about. See the torn dorsal on this guy, my geo is like that but across the entire top of the dorsal. At first I thought it may have been aggro but that usually looks like the fish below with just random places on the dorsal. All other fins are perfect on them.

Would adding salt or maybe some stress coat help?

Water changes will help. No need to add salt or stress coat.

thanks Lupin. I have checked water parameters and they are not out of the norm.

I am kinda over stocked cause I broke down one tank and waiting to setup another so fish had to go somewhere in the meantime.

I'll try to up my WC to every week and see if they get better. I have slacked the last few months and have been doing 60-70% every two weeks

hey would i just keep doing water changes if my fishes fins have a little white on the edges and they're kinda clamped?

Yes, try doing it daily for at least a week. If no improvement happens, go for antibiotics as chances are it is bacterial infection.
