Anyone have any experience with fin rot and gars? I have used salt, raised temps, water changes..... Water parameters are dead on for everything. Anyone use some type of meds? Thanks.

you may get some different opinions on this topic. i have used light doses of melafix with success. do you have any pics of the fish?

The closest I've had is a single slit of fin rot with my Rocket Gar, then again, it's not a true Gar.

My advice is do a BIG water change and add some Erythromycin to kick that fin rot in the tail. Don't put the salt down or lower the temp though.

tetracyclin works like a charm
even on polys

Why use medications on something easily fixed with just salt, raised temp and patience. It is unnecessary to use antibiotics. If you have tried the above and it did not work then you need to look at what the cause is and fix it directly. Shotgun treating with meds is not going to do anything if the cause is something else.

I would be very weary of using melafix as this screws up primitive fish (Particularly air breathers)...

i used a half dose for 2 days (when one of my FL/Spotteds jumped out of the tank). i only used it to help stave off any infections, then the treatments were only salt based.

i do agree though...in this situation salt should do the job and unless the fish came from the lfs with fin rot i would be more concerned about the cause of the problem. if salt isnt helping, then you have bigger problems.

I agree with the other guys, however in my experience, simple salt and water changes have only helped heal the damage only to let it spring up again weeks later.

The only other advice I can give you is to check all your parameters. Check your filter, anything in the tank, etc. If there's one fish that seems to have it the worst, separate it into another tank and treat it alone in there. This process recently helped me with my Albino Senegal Bichir.

Your fish is not a Gar (Lepisosteid) so has little bearing on this discussion. These fish are very different.

I am going through the same with my gar at the moment, my TSN decide to take a chunk of its tail.

He's 12" and in a 20 gallon tank right now, he's not happy, but I am able to do WC every 2 days (5 gallon per WC), keep the temp at 84 degrees and use salt at every WC.

His tail has started to grow again, it doea take sometime, don't expect to have the full tail back to normal in a week or two. It took my gar to start growing the tail at about 3 weeks. I suspect in 2-3 months, his taill will be where it once was...

Of course the TSN is now gone...but I am not putting him in the big tank yet as WC on 24 is more PITA than a 20 gallon.
