i think one of my bichirs has fin rot.. whats a good way to treat this and how can i prevent it in the future....

1. Make sure it's fine rot and no one is beating up on him. Bichirs will definately fight with each other. Or was he torn up when you got him?
2. Check your water quality (ammonia, nitrites, nitrates) and do water changes to bring them into an acceptable range (0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, nitrates below 20ppm (usually I would say higher nitrates is ok, but with finrot it is best to bring them down as low as possible)). If they're extremely high at least bring them into the 40ppm range.
3. Treat with an erythromycin based med (main ingredient in Maracyn). I would suggest quarantining the sick one and treating just him if you don't think any of the others have issues, but it's ok to treat whole tank if you don't have that option. It will, however, be more expensive to do so.

To prevent finrot in the future all it takes is proper quarantine of new fish and good water quality. For maintaining bichirs nitrate levels of 40 and below are good.
