Help! My newely purchased Green Terror has developed fin rot I think...The fins are getting smaller on his back The he is only 2 inches & already the fins arnt looking too good. I do regular water changes 35 gals a month from a 100 gal tank. He's living with a couple of blue gils & four gold fish from the small pond in the back yard..& a small clown loach. Theres a lg pleco in there also There in the house for the winter.. They all look good except for the small green terror.. I am feeding him flake food & sinking tabs for a plicostomus .& shrimp pellets ..He's eating plenty. Help!

Hi.:)

Pls post your water parameters. Most likely it is poor water quality that is to blame for finrot cases.

Try Maracyn 2 for finrot. Meanwhile pls maintain good water conditions. This will help the healing of the fins. Water changes is the last thing that will help you. Try to buy a liquid test kit if you haven't yet.
The other med I can suggest is Sera Baktopur in case Maracyn 2 is not available.

Good luck.:)

Hi Bluebell
I have a smaller 30 gal tank running, empty but was holding a bluegil (moved to larger tank)so it is cycled...Should I transfer him & treat the 30 or treat the whole 100 gal tank....I have a liq test kit will post results..
Thanks,

If it is finrot you will have a high bacterial load in the entire tank, if it is a case excaberated by of aggressive fish seperate them and treat both tanks, otherwise just treat the tank it is in.

Fin rot can be brought on by stress too. Probably a combination of factors, stress and water quality. The fish you have are big waste producers. I don't think 35 Gallons WC a month is good enough. Maybe 35 gallons once a week. If you feed heavily I'd even try 50 gallons a week.

Clean water will work wonders for your fish. If you can store it and pre-treat and pre-heat it before applying to the tank, even better.

You can medicate all you want but if your water quality doesn't improve your fish won't either.
