Has anyone ever attempted fin surgery for a catfish? Would it work? I know this is done regularly for arowanas but I've never heard of it being done for a catfish.

I got a new catfish today and her fins are looking pretty rough. I'd like to help her get her fins squared away, but I'm not sure if the removed fin tissue would grow back perfectly like it does for aros. I'd imagine it would, but I want to be sure before I attempt the surgery.

I never heard of this with a catfish but admittily not my area of expertese, however I would think it would work in exactly the same way as long as care was taken to only cut the soft rays which will regenerate. That's all I can offer on this subject. Unless there is a serious deformity which is affecting the quality of life I would allow the fins to regenerate normally with clean water a good diet and a couple of months of time as opposed to "cosmetic" surgery.

I agree with Tom. I would wait a couple of weeks before doing anything as the fish is probably stressed enough. But I will say that my giraffe nose cats fin was nipped in half when I first got him and it healed completely in about a month

Thanks all. I intend to let her heal naturally before I attempt anything. I'd only attempt this if she doesn't heal right.
