Ok i think ive decided on a snake to keep, if i decide on one.

Smooth green snake. This is a native species to PA but i can only keep one if i purchase it from out of state. This is a strictly insect eatting snake which is awesome!!! i hate rodents:irked:

I think i know how im gonna build its cage. But any info anybody knows would be great. Any care tips, personall experience, place to buy one etc would be great!!

Also i know these eat insects. I read some were people have seen them hunting minnows. ANybody think it would be worth while for me to build a 2 or 3 gallon pond in its cage to keep guppies in?

So any info would be great!!

I've never kept one but i know they like it very thickly planted with plenty of climbing structure, a small pond couldn't hurt an i bet it would be fun to watch

They don't fare well in captivity, Lep. Most are WC. They don't make good handling snakes, as they are flighty and nervous, not to mention delicate. They don't make good display animals either, as they have insane camo. You could get a Garter Snake... captive bred, lots of localities/subspecies, and they will take earthworms and Tilapia fillet.

Ha nice snake where you buying him

yea the rough green snake does better in captivity , but myself have kept this one for over a year in a 20 g long with plenty of branches and a large water tub . a variety of insects and high humidity by spraying the tank would help. of course this was 10 odd years ago so there care and info prob has been better understood.

dont really want to hold. more of view. cant own rough. most are WC i know. The dont fare well, iv heard but i find tons of stuff sayin get it to eat and ur fine. No problems i can find other than that. Garters just dont interest me.

just treat for parasites, and offer a varied diet and should be fine , most definitely a hands off species but very good looking vivarium subject.

strictly insect eating? i thought i read somewhere that no snakes eat insects/arachnids...

then again, that was a very old book...

nope , this species is strictly insectivorous.

Since they are usually loaded with parasites I wonder if you could gut load the insects with garlic so you wouldn't have to deal with medicating the snakes for parasites but sill get rid of them? That is if the individual is eating in the first place.
