After a really long wait ~ my Paretroplus Maculatus group is finally here! Interestingly there is one that I'm pretty sure is not a Maculatus, it must have made its way in by mistake during packing... they're approx 1.5 inches. The 11th fish wasn't on the invoice. I ??think?? it is a Kieneri, the eyes and coloring are different and the telltale one spot is missing.

Sorry for the spotty glass, I thought I thought it was clean. Temp is at 82, they're eating everything and are all very active. I will take more pics soon.

Any thoughts on my surprise?

Thanks,
Laurie

Fabulous group you've got there, and the black sheep does look like kieneri, nice little extra.
Lots to look forward to with both species.
I have 5 maculatus in a 125, they range from 5"-8" and I've had them about 3 years.
Had 6 but 1 became hyper-dominant and I gave it to the Milwaukee Zoo for their new Madagascar exhibit

Thanks Duane, I hope mine are as stunning as yours. Your pics are always fantastic!

Since there's already a Kieneri in my group, I'm considering adding 4 or 5 more. Is there a risk of crossbreeding with Kieneri and Maculatus? I've read in posts Kieneri are smaller and less aggressive. And Maculatus are larger in time, but not as aggressive as other paretroplines such as Menarambo or Dambabe...

I never had a problem with kieneri trying to cross breed, not saying they couldn't, but they are very different than maculatus.
My maculatus are only a bit aggressive and concerned with each other, but they seem to ignore all other species.
