I am taking the day off work tomorrow and changing the substrate in my tank from river rock to sand. I was told that pool filter sand is good but I am making sure that I am remembering right. I am not supposed to use sand with silica in it right.

I use the Crystal Sand from home depot. It works great. I rinsed it well and had very minimal clouding after adding it to the tank. And for 7 bucks for a 50 lbs bag you can't beat it IMOP.

There will be plenty of people who say silica-based sand is fine, and others who say it isn't.
A lot of people do use pool filter sand as well. I don't think you can really go wrong either way.

Don't buy the crap from Ace, imo some silica sands are safe.. some are not.. the one from ACE is not. When you watch the fish you've raised bleed all over and do death rolls after playing in the cheap sand.. you'll regret being "thrifty" Not saying not to buy sand at a good price.. but make sure what you're buying is 100% fish safe first.

What did you go with? This is what I used from HD. I also used one bag PFS and found no advantage. I actually liked the HD sand better.

i actually just did the same and its the best decision ive made in a while! i used regular pool filter sand and no problems..

I got quikrete medium grade sand thinking it would be a little heavier and I hate it! I just don't think I'm going to like sand, am going to try tahitian moon sand in my 75 and that will be the test. Get whatever kind you want. I keep hearing better things about pool filter sand than play sand. If I were you I'd definitely stay away from playsand.

I used the Crayola sand for kids sandbox. Comes in really bright colors, it's incredibly soft too. Only like $6. for 20 lbs. One rinse did the trick for me. I think this sand is beautiful!~ But then again, what can you expect from a woman that can't get enough blue in the aquarium.:) Love the blue best. Comes also in green, purple, red. The colors very by WalMart, from store to store.
